Why is Denver So Haunted?
Denver was founded in 1858 as a mining town by General William Larimer. Looking across the creek, he spotted the St. Charles claim and headed over to stake a square-mile claim of his own. Larimer and his crew gave the representatives whiskey, promises, and the threat of a noose. St. Charles was thereby surrendered to Larimer.
The site was renamed Denver City after Kansas City Governor James W. Denver. In 1862 high winds fueled a fire that broke out in Denver, causing devastating loss. Laws were passed prohibiting wood for buildings, and Denver began to rebuild its buildings using brick.
The Silver boom in 1879 brought much fortune to Denver. Saloons, gambling dens, theater all kept the city alive and flourishing. Along with it also came crime and corruption. Underworld bosses worked side by side with city officials and police to profit from gambling and other criminal activity.
While some brought crime, others fought to combat it. In 1893 the women’s suffrage organized the prohibition and the right to be treated equally. The two World Wars and the Great Depression changed Denver’s times like the rest of the country, and mining turned into manufacturing. The old pioneer days were long gone, and Denver modernized.

Otherwise known as The Unsinkable, Molly Brown was a philanthropist and Denver local who survived the sinking of the Titanic. In line with her indomitable character, local legend has it that Molly Brown still wanders the halls of her stately home to this day. Since the Brown family were frequent travelers, the home was often a boarding house for various guests. Numerous characters have passed its threshold over the years—will you be one of them?
CROKE-PATTERSON-CAMPBELL HOUSE
First built in 1891, the Croke-Patterson-Campbell House is an iconic, enormous structure. Easily classified as a mansion, it once belonged to State Senator Thomas Macdonald Patterson. It now operates as a hotel, but its history refuses to stay buried in the past. Considered one of the most haunted places in Colorado, sightings of ghostly apparitions and unexplained happenings are commonplace at this iconic house.
PEABODY WHITEHEAD MANSION
Nicknamed the most haunted house in Colorado, the Peabody Whitehead Mansion is a well-known fixture within Denver, but few know its true history. It once belonged to the surgeon William Riddick Whitehead. Some say that the spirits of the soldiers William Whitehead could not save haunt the home.
