Susie was a great guide. She even included her own personal experiences in her talk. Good story teller. Beautiful walk around Atlanta in the evening. A fun night.
For a smaller city in the heart of the midwest, Akron has endured generations of conflict and crime. Ohio suffered brutal battles while still a territory during the French and Indian War, and the Indigenous people of the area faced violence and forced removal throughout the nineteenth century. Settled in 1810, Akron quickly became the capital of rubber and tire manufacturing, but it also experienced years of civil unrest and corruption at the hands of organized crime.
The original Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company opened in Akron, Ohio, in 1898, which led to the city becoming one of the nation’s fastest growing towns a decade later. Unfortunately, in 1900, Akron suffered a tragedy of racial intolerance which spiraled into a sensationalist news frenzy inciting a mob to storm the streets in search of vigilante justice. These rioters caused so much destruction and chaos that martial law had to be declared to stymie the havoc but not before countless people were injured and two other innocent children were killed.
Other unseemly events and people would plague Akron throughout the twentieth century including the mobster Rosario Borgio who helped bring the Mafia to Akron. The Black Hand, a series of groups led by Borgio, terrorized and threatened citizens with extortion rackets and violence. In 1917, Borgio declared war on Akron’s police and ordered at least four officers killed. Luckily, justice was served and Borgio was eventually arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death by the electric chair.
The murders and madness that scarred Akron have clearly left an imprint; perhaps that’s why so many spirits haunt the town’s buildings and streets. Do they have unresolved business? Can they not accept the fact that they’re dead? Join Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours to uncover Akron’s most haunted places and dismal tales.
Be you hankering for haunted colleges or creepy high schools, this city holds many specters within its educational hubs. Otherworldly laughter, bodiless footfalls, and shadowy figures lurk within the corridors of Akron’s institutes of knowledge, yearning to make themselves known.
The streets of Akron are littered with old homes — many of which contain solemn pasts and strange secrets. The spirits within whisper of anguish and lives cut short, their unearthly echoes leaving bizarre imprints on mirrors and walls, like in the murder house on Copley Road or the eerie Darrow Row Victorian.
Discover the figures that made Akron the dynamic city it is today, from Co-founder General Perkins, who donated the land for Akron’s oldest public school building, to its lesser-known characters, like Phantom Fran.
Akron Beacon Journal Publishing
Where ink once stained paper and headlines shook the city, the old home of the Akron Beacon Journal now echoes with the chilling presence of a white-haired specter, watching from the dark corners where no light dares to reach.
Akron Civic Center
The walls of this historic theatre hide more than memories — restless spirits drift through its halls, from shadowy drifters to a loyal staff member who refuses to leave his post, even in death.
Perfect Pour
Perfect Pour, built over the bones of a secret speakeasy, still echoes with the rage of a bitter ghost, whose fury shatters the silence with every outburst.
