Susie was a great guide. She even included her own personal experiences in her talk. Good story teller. Beautiful walk around Atlanta in the evening. A fun night.
In Atchison, the past is never far away… it might even be standing right behind you. Though the city wasn’t founded until 1854, the area had been inhabited for centuries by the Kansa People (aka the Kaw Nation) whom the state was later named after. Strangely, Lewis and Clark noted on their famous expedition of an abandoned Kansa village where Atchison would later flourish. There has never been any known reason why these people would leave their home, which has caused many to speculate that darker forces were at play and that may still exist.
Half a century later, as the Kansas Territory opened, Atchison quickly developed into a gateway to the West. Steamboats on the Missouri River, cargo and freight cars of the Santa Fe Railroad, and Mormon wagon trains all passed through Atchison. From 1854 until 1861, the state saw violence break out over slavery; these six years became labeled “bleeding Kansas” due to the amount of bloodshed and destruction, and Atchison had its share of murder and terror.
After the Civil War’s end, Atchison established itself as a transportation and industrial center, but it also quickly became infamous for tales of unexplained phenomena and disturbing lore. By the mid-twentieth century, ghost hunters visited in droves to explore the chilling whispers and frightening sights reported by residents. Students at Benedictine College have been trapped in their closets by invisible spirits; they’ve seen chairs move on their own; and others have awoken to bloodcurdling growls coming from the dark. Are these occurrences caused by the school’s founding monks who hope to keep education lively? Or, perhaps, there is something more malevolent happening when the sun goes down?
Listen closely. There’s plenty of screams and menacing laughter in the night to chill your bones on this tour. From Sunflower State natives hoping to learn more about history, to horror fanatics who love being scared, Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours can help uncover the spooky side of things and reveal what lurks in the shadows.
There’s a general bucket list of haunted locations around the United States, with places like Waverly Hills and Salem often high on them. Atchison is a lesser-known part of Kansas yet is home to haunted hotspots that rival the activity at more notable venues. It’s a break from the typical, with former homes and mansions that look to be pulled from the minds of horror’s finest visionaries.
Atchison’s history starts with one big unanswered question: What happened to the Kansa people who settled it years before Lewis and Clark arrived? Remnants of the tribe were left in place as if something drove the native population off. Could it have been the sinister energy that flows through locations like the Sallie House and the Gargoyle House?
Being the site of Civil War conflicts, Atchison could very well have become a series of buildings plagued by residuals of the bloody conflict. Rather, the city has an eclectic array of spirits, from men who tempted fate just one time too many times to the specter of a young girl trapped in eternal torment.
RavenHearse Manor
This mansion exudes fear. Built in1888, there are rumors that the original inhabitants enjoyed strange funeral traditions, and legends persist that a spirit in a yellow Victorian era dress beckons for visitors to follow her.
Sallie House
Pain and screams persist in this house of horrors. Once owned by a local doctor, this is where at least one unfortunate patient endured surgery without anesthesia. Hear her agonizing wails of suffering if you dare!
Santa Fe Depot
Established in 1880, the Santa Fe Depot is home to “Hangman Bill,” the spirit of a worker crushed by a ton of cargo when a cable snapped. Ominous stomping of his boots echoes throughout the building even though no one else is around.
