Why is Colorado Springs So Haunted?

Colorado Springs’ haunted reputation runs deep, with infamous former residents like Nicholas Tesla drawn to the energy that’s palpable here. The spirits of the past have a way of echoing through its streets. At the Avenue Hotel, guests reported unexplained light phenomena and it’s rumored to hold the spirits of several children and a coachman who frequented the hotel in the gold rush era.
Also contributing to its spooky reputation is the historic Evergreen Cemetery. Eerie sightings have been reported as these ancient grounds seem to tether the living to the dead. The cemetery, which holds the graves of pioneers and soldiers, is known for its strange occurrences as if the souls buried there have never truly found peace.

The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind has served Colorado since 1874. Unfortunately, it also has a reputation for unexplained activity. These unusual hauntings seem to appear to those the school is meant to serve, as deaf students have claimed to see shadows move, and blind students often report disembodied sounds. Visitors often leave with an uneasy feeling as if they’d crossed paths with spirits from another realm.
Then there is Briarhurst Manor Estate, adding to Colorado Springs’ chilling lore. Known for its elegant yet haunting charm, this 19th-century mansion holds centuries of secrets. Visitors and staff alike have reported seeing figures in Victorian clothing, hearing disembodied footsteps, and feeling a sudden, icy chill as they explore the property. Some claim they’ve seen the ghost of a woman in an old-fashioned dress gazing from the windows, her sorrowful expression frozen in time. If you’re brave enough to explore the otherworldly side of Colorado Springs, be warned: the spirits here aren’t shy.

Most Haunted Places in Colorado Springs

Pioneer Museum

The El Paso County Courthouse, now the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, carries a haunted past. After a murder between janitors Eddie Beals and Willie Butler shocked the city in 1959, reports of unexplained occurrences began. Visitors also glimpse "The Gray Lady," believed to be Laura Mathews, rumored to be unhappy with her suspicious death's "suicide" ruling.

The Antlers Hotel

The Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs has seen three incarnations since 1883, haunted by figures like Judge Baldwin, a pioneer with a dark past, and a high school girl in a white dress believed to have died after prom. Ghostly encounters include eerie presences, phantom footsteps, and chilling whispers, drawing guests into its haunting legacy.

The Rabbit Hole

Once a morgue for flu victims during the 1918 epidemic, The Rabbit Hole now echoes with ghostly activity. Guests and staff report bottles falling, objects flying, and eerie voices groaning for help. The basement’s macabre history—and the countless orbs captured in photographs—lend a haunting charm to this “Alice in Wonderland”-themed establishment.
