Lansing’s rich history and cultural evolution make it a hotspot for the otherworldly. Among its haunted landmarks, Michigan State University is particularly notable. Founded in 1855, MSU is one of the oldest universities in the country, and with its age comes ghostly lore. Beaumont Tower, a beloved landmark on campus, is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Mary Mayo, whose name graces one of the university’s residence halls. Students and staff have reported eerie piano music in empty rooms, flickering lights, and unexplainable cold spots, especially near the Tower at night.
The Old Lansing City Cemetery adds another layer to the city’s otherworldly reputation. Established in the 1800s, it houses the graves of many of Lansing’s earliest settlers, along with Civil War soldiers and other historic figures. Visitors have reported seeing ghostly apparitions wandering between the gravestones, particularly during misty mornings or quiet evenings. Some even claim to hear faint voices calling out names or soft footsteps trailing behind them, even when they’re alone.

Another key location that solidifies Lansing’s haunted status is the Turner Dodge Mansion. Built in 1855, this grand house was home to one of Lansing’s founding families. While it’s now a museum, its historic charm is accompanied by tales of unexplained activity. Guests and staff have reported seeing shadowy figures in period attire, hearing unexplained footsteps echoing through the halls, and even smelling phantom floral perfumes. The most active areas are said to be the grand staircase and the upstairs bedrooms.
From historic campuses and eerie cemeteries to regal mansions, Lansing is a city where the past and present seem to coexist—sometimes in the form of lingering spirits. These hauntings invite curiosity and a sense of wonder about the city’s storied history.
Explore the R.E. Olds Transportation Museum or the Michigan History Center, and you’ll be privy to broader strokes of the city’s bygone days. These museums (along with MSU’s own on-site museum) offer educational and interesting facts about the city but don’t quite dig beneath the surface. For that, you can turn to Heart City Ghosts, who will pull back the veil and really expose the Heart of Michigan.
During spring and summer, Lansing can be a beautiful city to walk through. While a casual stroll through the park or a stop at the Rotary Steam Clock can be delightful, they take on a whole new feel when led by Heart City Ghosts. Not only will you see many of Lansing’s most notable sights, you’ll hear the haunted history behind each and take home the best souvenir of all — memories.
Dating back to the 14th century (or even before that, based on certain theories), the fraternal organization has a fascinating history that found its way into Lansing in the early 20th century. Heart City Ghosts spotlights the Masonic Temple and explores some of the organization’s mysterious past, including the alleged rituals that may be behind the cloaked apparitions still patrolling the former temple.

Michigan State Capitol
A historic landmark since 1879, it has a haunted past with four tragic deaths, eerie cold spots, and ghostly activity, including shadowy figures and whispered encounters.

Masonic Temple
Built in 1924, the Temple has a rich history and mystery, including eerie ghost sightings, a hooded apparition, and unexplainable phenomena.

Rotary Steam Clock
The clock stands on the site of the tragic 1934 Kerns Hotel fire, which claimed 34 lives, including seven legislators. Spectral activity includes residual hauntings at the clock and shadowy figures near victims’ graves in Mount Hope Cemetery.
