Long before the seaside boardwalks and high-rise hotels, this land was home to the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation, with roots tracing back to 6,000 B.C. When Spanish settlers arrived in the 1700s, this Native community was enslaved, abused, and exposed to deadly diseases. They were told that their lives would improve under Colonial rule, but the truth was far darker. Over time, their population was nearly wiped out, leaving a deep scar on the land and a legacy that has shaped Long Beach’s ghostly history ever since.
As time moved on, California’s storied past began to take shape. White settlers moved west during the Gold Rush, the Civil War left its mark on the state, and railroads sliced through the land, paving the way for more tourism, job opportunities, and westward expansion. For nearly a decade in the early 1900s, Long Beach was the nation’s fastest-growing city. Oil discoveries in the 1920s paved the way for more wealth and development in this area. But it also opened the door to pain and suffering.
Even as Long Beach thrived, it wasn’t immune to the violent throes of history. In 1933, a devastating, 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the city, killing 120 people and leaving behind $50 million in damage – that’s $1.2 billion today! Long Beach also played a part in World War II, the Civil Rights and Chicano movements, and the unrest following the Rodney King attack. Each moment left a mark on the city, fueling its otherworldly lore.
Today, Long Beach is a Californian paradise, but it carries a spooky undercurrent. Like the living, the undead are drawn to water. Large bodies of water are believed to amplify unexplained activity by conducting energy. This is certainly the case for Long Beach, where the sunny shores mask something much darker and far more unsettling.
