At the heart of Montpelier’s haunted lore is the chilling tale of the Weeping Lady of Green Mount Cemetery. This tranquil resting place is known not just for its serene beauty but for a spectral figure often seen wandering among the gravestones. The Weeping Lady is believed to be the spirit of a woman who died tragically, forever mourning a love lost to the cruel hands of fate. Her sorrow echoes through the cemetery, and visitors report hearing soft sobs carried on the wind, even when no one else is present.

The story of the Weeping Lady is far from the only unsettling phenomenon tied to this cemetery. Green Mount Cemetery also hosts a variety of inexplicable occurrences—headstones that seem to shift positions, phantom footsteps that follow visitors but leave no trace, and an overwhelming sense of being watched. These experiences have cemented the cemetery as one of the most haunted spots in Vermont, drawing both thrill-seekers and ghost hunters from across the country.
