In the Star City of the North, the only thing more chilling than the cool mountain air is the eerie tales of those whose spirits roam the streets in the dead of night. From the early American pioneers who braved the wilderness to the Civil War soldiers who never quite marched off the battlefield, Roanoke is brimming with the ghosts of those trapped between this world and the next. Lizzie Borden Ghosts Tour leads the way into the heart of Roanoke’s most haunted places, where the ghosts of those caught in violent skirmishes and untimely deaths continue to bear the brunt of centuries-old misfortune. Hear secrets that only the dead could tell, all while standing where history and hauntings come alive.
For many decades, old Roanoke was a peaceful town tucked away in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, where Native tribes lived simple lives and thrived off the land’s abundant resources. As the railroads snaked their way into the valley, Roanoke’s sleepy days were replaced with an influx of soldiers, merchants, and merchants-turned-soldiers. Learn about the city’s haunted transformation with Lizzie Borden Ghosts Tour and uncover the chilling stories left behind by those who couldn’t leave Roanoke, even in death.
Roanoke’s strategic location in the heart of Virginia made it a key player during the Civil War. With railroads, fortifications, and hospitals turning the city into a battleground, it became the epicenter of a bloody struggle. Thousands of soldiers fought and died in the area, and the ghosts of these fallen warriors still roam, carrying the weight of their unfinished business. While the Civil War may have ended, its echoes are still heard in the whispers of ghosts who can’t let go.

Many of the spirits in Roanoke are tied to the land itself, and the area is dotted with ancient burial sites—especially those belonging to the Native American tribes who once lived in the region. It’s said that the spirits of these early inhabitants never truly left, lingering in the forests, their energy still pulsing in the land. Some believe they are waiting for someone to finally acknowledge their suffering, and if you’re in the right spot at the right time, you might just feel them reach out.
Students have long whispered about strange sounds, cold drafts, and the shadowy figure of a lovelorn lady around the old dormitories of Roanoke’s Hollins University in the dead of night. Some say she lingers, trying to find someone to listen to her broken heart, while others claim she’s just looking for company, ready to join you on your walk through history. Old taverns are known for their eerie energy, and the historic Coffee Pot Roadhouse is no exception. Patrons have reported seeing ghostly figures sitting at the bar, their reflections disappearing in the mirrors just as quickly as they appear.
Downtown Roanoke is not short of things to do after nightfall, but a person can only do so much drinking and eating. Take a break from the staples of Roanoke’s nightlife and turn your attention to an experience that’s bound to satisfy your appetite for mystery and thrills.
You’re sure to hear plenty of ghost stories tied to contemporary outlets throughout Ronaoke, but those stories may not always satisfy that paranormal itch, as well as older haunts. Lucky for you, some of the city’s hauntings date back to the 19th century, shortly after its founding in 1852. Let Roanoke Ghosts transport you back more than 150 years for tales nearly as old as the city itself.
You’ve already visited the Taubman Museum of Art and marveled at the ornate Saint Andrews Catholic Church. Your feet can’t handle another hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but maybe they’ll be up for a wholly unique tour brimming with engaging stories bound to embed themselves in your brain. Roanoke Ghosts has a bounty of haunting tales to tell you will remember for years to come.
The City Market Building
Rebuilt after a fiery setback in 1922, the City Market Building is still a bustling hub—for both shoppers and spirits. Locals say spirits still shop here, with merchandise moving on its own and cold spots sending chills through the air.
The Patrick Henry
After a tragic death in the '80s, the building became a permanent resting place for one unlucky guest and some dapper apparitions. Guests have reported chilling encounters with these spectral figures, and you can experience them firsthand when you book a Roanoke ghost tour.
Corned Beef & Co.
Originally part of the City Market Building, Corned Beef & Co. now stands as a favorite spot for locals—and for a territorial ghost. Staff have reported strange occurrences near a painting in the manager’s office, with objects moving on their own and shadows lurking in the corners.
