Why is Charleston So Haunted?
Charleston is the largest city in the state of South Carolina, and it’s a wonder that the town survived its turbulent early years. Founded in 1670 as Charles Town after King Charles II, it wasn’t incorporated as Charleston until 1783. Charleston went down in history as a major slave-trading port; however, in 2018, officials formally apologized for its involvement after CNN gave it a bad rap.
Tragedy and turmoil struck the port city right off the bat with a smallpox epidemic in 1698, followed by a devastating earthquake in 1699 that caused a fire that destroyed a third of the town. And then along came malaria and yellow fever, the latter causing 6-7 outbreaks through the 18th century, developing the reputation as the 13 colonies’ least healthy location.
It took until the 1950s, when pesticides were invented, which cut down on mosquito disease transmission, for Charleston to lose that reputation. Pirates were attracted to Charleston, and in 1718 the notorious Blackbeard caused havoc for the town, invading and holding it captive for four days. In its early days, Charleston relied on pine timber, pitch for ships, and tobacco. Soon cotton plantations were built, adding to the growing economy of the city.
The Civil War began and ended in Charleston, but it trudged on even after an earthquake in 1886 nearly destroyed it. Disease, war, natural disasters, slavery, prejudices, and buccaneers all add to the history of Charleston, which today is a popular tourist spot.

Blind Tiger Pub
When it comes to the Blind Tiger Pub, the name itself says it all. The name, coined in the late 1800s, was a common phrase that usually described sordid establishments. These places allowed illicit gambling and drinking behind closed doors in an era of increased temperance legislation. As a port city and one of the first to enact laws against drinking, Charleston had many such establishments. The current Blind Tiger Pub plays homage to this side of Charleston's cultural roots in a historic building that dates back to the early 1800s and boasts many ghostly encounters.
Dungeon
Formally known as the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, this site is a relic of Charleston’s dark past as a port city. Don’t let the stately Georgian appearance on the street level deceive you, though—the basement beneath is filled with eerie halls once occupied by long-dead prisoners, many of whom are said to haunt the building still today. As with the rest of Charleston, there’s more than meets the eye going on behind its elegantly architected walls.
F.W. Wagener Building
Named after one of Charleston’s most famous businessmen, Frederick Wilhelm Wagener, the F.W. Wagener building was initially constructed to house his cotton and phosphate trading ventures. It earned its haunted reputation after the business downturns following the end of the Civil War pushed one young associate into committing suicide on the third floor. The building has had many afterlives since, as fine-dining restaurants and breweries. However, everyone who works there reports similar ghostly incidents and an inexplicable “chill” coming from the old offices on the upper floors.

As it is unfair to other guests, we do not wait for late or no show parties. Please remember to arrive to the correct location on time! We do not grant refunds to guests who fail to arrive to the appointed place on time and miss their tour.
