Why is Birmingham So Haunted?

Birmingham’s dark history began thousands of years ago when native people walked the land. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and the Upper Creek or Muskogee people resided in Birmingham when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto came to Alabama looking for gold in 1519.

Not long before becoming its own state, Alabama became one of the largest adopters of the domestic slave trade. Hundreds of thousands of souls were forced to leave their native lands and come to Alabama to work in its many mills, plantations, and farms, and many of them died here, too. Birmingham was founded in 1871. In the early 1900s, the city grew rapidly, only to decline during the Great Depression.

A few decades later, Birmingham faced struggle once again. As people fought for equality, sit-ins, marches, and other protests were staged here often, resulting in widespread incarceration. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. penned his famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” here. In 1963, a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan killed four Black girls at the 16th Street Baptist Church. One year later, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law.

Today, Birmingham keeps its history close at hand. In addition to the many museums and monuments dedicated to its past, the Magic City is a hotbed of unexplained activity that reminds you that the past is never truly dead. From the tortured souls of former slaves to the many restless spirits of the Civil Rights movement, there are many spirits here, just waiting to send a chill down your spine. Hear these stories and others on a Birmingham ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours!
