Susie was a great guide. She even included her own personal experiences in her talk. Good story teller. Beautiful walk around Atlanta in the evening. A fun night.
Burlington was previously home to indigenous Abenaki and Mohawk tribes. These people established Burlington’s first spooky sighting: a giant, serpentine monster in modern-day Lake Champlain called him the “Gitaskog.” Today, we call him “Champ the Lake Monster,” and more than 600 people claim to have laid eyes on Champ since European settlers began moving in on this area in 1609.
Burlington’s past isn’t only marked by folklore. The War of 1812 is a grim chapter in the town’s history book. During this time, 5,000 US servicemen were stationed in the town, and before long, disease and unsanitary living conditions claimed hundreds of lives. Legend has it that their spirits still wander the town, searching for a steamboat or railroad ticket back home.
Burlington prospered in the mid-1800s when the city became the U.S.’s third-largest lumber supplier. Eventually, the local supply of wood began to dry up, and Burlington began to trade other goods, using a new railroad system to do so. Sadly, hundreds of workers lost their lives building the Vermont Central Railroad and the Rutland Railroad. Then, in 1895, a series of fires destroyed several buildings along Burlington’s waterfront, including mills, warehouses, and even a fire station.
These days, the once-industrial waterfront area has been transformed into a recreational area with plenty of green space—however, Burlington’s turbulent past lives on through otherworldly occurrences and an unshakeable sense of melancholy. Not every ghostly tale disappears with time. With Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours, you can take a trip back in time and uncover Burlington’s hidden history.
The massive lake between the New York and Vermont border has instilled fear and fascination since before Burlington was founded. Deep water and cold temperatures have fueled speculation of serpents and spirits beyond the pale. Hear all about it on a haunted Burlington tour with Burlington Ghosts.
