Why is Cleveland So Haunted?

Cleveland’s abhorrent and often criminal past has left it riddled with specters and spirits of great supernatural reputation. It comes as no surprise that the city, once called “The Mistake on the Lake,” has seen more than a few vicious deaths and tragic disasters in its time. The banks of Lake Erie have seen prohibition-era gangsters and corrupt politicians work their way into the city’s finely woven fabric.

Now, the spirits they created appear in photographs as hazy figures and peak out of dark alleyways when least expected. From the Public Square, where it all began, to the Terminal Tower looming high above the city, the skies and the streets serve as a playground for the otherworldly. At the 1922 Connor Palace, an old usher still serves his guests in a kind and courtly manner. Dressed in green, some think he is the mysterious “Man In The Green Coat” that has been seen around Playhouse Square.

Public Square was where it all began in 1796. From there, the city stretched outward under General Moses Cleaveland’s vision. The Soldiers and Sailor Monument to the dead soldiers of the Civil War sprung up in 1891, and ever since, apparitions and orbs have appeared near its 125-foot-tall statue.

Cleveland was an industrial powerhouse and the fifth-largest city in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. The Terminal Tower was built to bring even more people into the city limits. But was the major disaster during construction that encased two construction workers in concrete worth it? Their muffled screams and appearances floating in mid-air seem to think not. Book a Cleveland ghost tour today to learn more about this terrible disaster and others in C-Town.
