Susie was a great guide. She even included her own personal experiences in her talk. Good story teller. Beautiful walk around Atlanta in the evening. A fun night.
Bob Womack had no idea what wealth awaited him and the rest of the United States when he rolled into the mineral-rich caldera that became Cripple Creek. Nor did he know what horrible atrocities would occur in the name of greed. The drunken miner finally convinced people that he was telling the truth and made 33 people become millionaires in the process.
Cripple Creek began to flourish as hundreds flocked to make their riches at the nearby El Paso Lode. Brothels, saloons, and hotels popped up to accommodate the hungry and often violent population. Horrendous fires, started by a red-light district worker and her boyfriend, tore the city asunder in 1896. It left 3,600 people homeless, and now strange lights bounce in the fields to act as ghostly reminders of this terrible incident. Murders became common. Victims of rage and ruin haunt the renovated buildings from this dangerous time.
By the 1930s, the mines began to dry up, and so did the town’s lively reputation. Cripple Creek found itself in a rut and struggled to get by. Many of its citizens did what they could, but judging by the amount of ghosts hanging around today, some didn’t fare so well. The old brothels and Casinos shuttered while the hotels catered to more ethereal guests.
The town began to bounce back in the 70s, but it wasn’t until 1991, when gambling was legalized, that Cripple Creek bounced back to its former glory. The casinos came alive with the sounds of electronic machines, and people once again attempted to make millions. But it seems the spirits of miners, cowboys, and criminals came back to life as well. Find out what spooky truths are waiting for you on a Cripple Creek ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours.
