Deadwood’s infamous history began in 1874 when General George Custer announced that gold awaited anyone brave enough to venture to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Swarths of gold-hungry settlers moved into the Dakota territory after the infamous Battle of Little Big Horn of 1876. Deadwood was founded that same year, a town built upon a foundation and betrayal.
Greed and violence perpetuated the town filled with miners, shady businessmen, ladies of the night, and outlaws. Murder became the norm, the most famous being Wild Bill Hitchok’s murder. Backstabbing antics became common, and vengeance was exacted without remorse, creating a lively otherworldly population.
In 1879, a fire raged through the streets and took 300 buildings with it, adding to the spectral stew Deadwood is known for today. The railroads brought more settlers, gold-panners, and troublemakers in 1893, and the Mt. Moriah cemetery began to fill with bodies as the years went along. Barbrtic violence coupled itself with disease, and now, over 3,500 graves fill the historic graveyard. Many still feel the icy touch of the dead as they wander through its hallowed grounds.
Another fire in 1894 wrecked the town even further, but the rough and rugged citizens rebuilt. The turn of the century and prohibition brought new criminals into the fold. Many brothels closed but continued to operate illegally. Phantoms from this time still haunt places like The Fairmont Hotel, where many ladies of the night occupy the third floor. Find out how and what spectral energies still lurk in the town’s dusty shadows on a thrilling Deadwood ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours.
Who isn’t?! The critically acclaimed show boasted three seasons and a movie and was praised for its historical accuracy. If you’re a fan of the Wild West and the series Deadwood was one of your favorites, taking a ghost tour with Deadwood Ghosts is a must. You’ll get to experience the place that left a lasting legacy in person and might even meet the ghostly characters that inspired the storylines.
It’s no secret that the Wild West was a time of murder and mayhem. A time when villains ran the show, and only the lucky survived. Debauchery was a way of life, and the events that made history were so volatile that their depiction on the big screen is still a tame version of what actually occurred. Deadwood Ghosts may give you a glimpse into the other side where these unsavory characters now reside, but we also give you the factual details on what got them there and show you exactly where it happened. For a first-hand look at the real Wild West, take a tour with Deadwood Ghosts.
