Why is Fort Myers So Haunted?

Lined with the burial mounds of the Calusa, the “fierce people,” Fort Myers’s haunted history is soaked with the blood of different people and places like no other in South Florida. When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, they wiped out nearly 5,000 years of humanity and laid a curse down upon Fort Myers that still persists today.

Violence between the Native people and European settlers increased the body count during the Seminole Wars. These wars lasted between 1817 and 1855 and created an immense amount of ghastly energy that could be felt in places all around the city. Three forts were constructed along the Caloosahatchee to protect against the Seminole Indians. One of these forts, Fort Harvie, became downtown Fort Myers.

Around this time, Pirates began to flock to South Florida’s inlets and waterways. These swashbucklers clashed with the US Government between 1805 and 1825 and were left in shallow graves along the coast, adding to the cesspool of death in Fort Myers. Such a grave was found in 1913 at the corner of Main and Monroe. Stories of strange apparitions appearing and disappearing before the naked eye now plague the area.

The beauty of South Flordia became known after Thomas Edison built his winter home here, and thousands flocked to the tropical temperatures. With them came gangsters, criminals, and some of the most despicable people in Florida history. Al Capone was a known frequenter of the Morgan Hotel, where Ford’s Garage now stands today. Many believe the ghost that haunts this local eatery is a victim of Capone’s villainous rage. Hear this story and more on a Fort Myers ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours.
