The mosquito-infested swamps that became Houston’s sprawling modern metropolis were unlikely candidates for civilization, making them all the more susceptible to a paranormal future. Two crazed real estate investors, brothers from New York, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Allen, landed in the Buffalo Bayou in 1836 and were determined to build a town in the barren swamps.
Texas had just won its independence from Mexico, and the doors were wide open for settlers to stake their claim. However, outlaws and villains came along with the hardworking and good-hearted folk from across the nation, and chaos ensued. The center of all the murderous violence was Market Square Park, where the infamous La Carafe lies today. The square was built in 1854, but the haunted bar was created in 1847 when Houston was still in formation.
The Civil War came and went, and Houston enthusiastically housed and supplied Confederate troops. Many did not want their ammunition and weapons to be found as Northern troops flooded the South. Dumped into the Buffalo Bayou, they were left as a dangerous surprise to unsuspecting citizens. Two inquisitive Houstonians were blown to bits where the Franklin Street bridge is today. Their spirits, wandering the Bayou, haunt their crypt underneath the bridge.
Houston progressed through the late 19th century at an incredible rate and became a center for commerce and trade. Buildings like The Kiam rose into the sky, and life was good. But, as the phantom elevator operator knows, death and disaster were not far away. The historic buildings that line downtown are filled with otherworldly energy. Take a ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours to learn all there is to know about Houston and its haunted history!

Our tours are deeply researched and chalked full of historical events that occurred here in Houston over the past hundreds of years. Houston’s culinary scene is impressive, there’s no denying. But after you ingest all the fajitas and nachos, you’ll be due for some movement!
