Something wasn’t right when Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon and his crew arrived on the island in 1513. It was full of bones! It is an unsettling start to a town rocked with paranormal activity ever since. Cayo Hueso, “The Island of Bones,” was born, and things would only get worse from there on out.
In 1821, Key West and the rest of Florida were transferred to the United States. No longer a secluded outpost, Key West was sold off in several real estate transactions before settling in as the richest city in America per capita in the 1830s. Many made their fortunes salvaging the wrecks of old ships and Spanish plunder off the coast. Grand coastal palaces were built along Key West’s idyllic coastline. Many are still inhabited by the same 19th-century souls who built them.
Key West became a tourist destination as the decades passed and travel became more common. Hotels were built, and many hold the ghosts of sun-soaked travelers. One of the most well-known is Casa Antigua, the part-time home of Key West’s most famous resident, Ernest Hemingway. He arrived in 1928 and fell in love with the island. Many say his ghost haunts the hotel, along with spirits from the Ford factory that used to lay below it.
Disasters in the form of hurricanes, fires, disease, and piracy were jammed into the 7.2 square mile island, creating a Caribbean wasteland of spiritual energy and unearthly activity. Discover a new kind of fun in the sun with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours. Book your spot on a Key West ghost tour tonight!
