Why is Knoxville So Haunted?

Knoxville’s haunted history stretches back further than the city itself. The Cherokee people inhabited the lands before Europeans arrived, and war was almost immediate when they did. Many Natives died of disease and violence, and some seemingly lingered on in disbelief.

The chaos of the Civil War tore Knoxville asunder as Union and Confederate forces battled for control. As the Civil War faded, the tensions it left behind became even more potent. Terrible lynchings occurred across the state, and Knoxville was no exception. One man jumped off the Gay Street Bridge to his death in the late 1800s to avoid the violence of a lynch mob.

Rapid growth during the end of the 19th century led to higher crime rates and disease outbreaks. The graveyards began filling, and the spirits of the town’s numerous deceased residents are known to still lurk between the decrypt tombstones. “Black Aggie,” who appears before sundown in a cloud of black mist at the Old Gray Cemetery, has frightened many unlucky souls out of his otherworldly home.

The new century brought more misery as Knoxville experienced a “Red Summer” in 1919. Race riots took over the city, and forty or more were left dead in the process. Now, shadow figures dart between the old booths of the 170-year-old Market Square as a grim reminder. Find out what other unearthly entities wander through Knoxville’s historic streets on a Knoxville ghost tour with Lizzie Borden Ghost Tours!
